Unfortunately, the original version of this article [1] contained an error. The corresponding author’s family name and given name were not included correctly and were inverted with given name being ‘Martin Sundström’ and family name being ‘Rehal’. The names are included correctly here, where ‘Martin’ is the given name and ‘Sundström Rehal’ is the family name. This will be corrected in the original article and the copyright line also.

Measuring energy expenditure in the intensive care unit: a comparison of indirect calorimetry by E-sCOVX and Quark RMR with Deltatrac II in mechanically ventilated critically ill patients.

BACKGROUND Indirect calorimetry allows the determination of energy expenditure in critically ill patients by measuring oxygen consumption (VO2) and carbon dioxide production (VCO2). Recent studies have demonstrated variable performance of "breath-by-breath" instruments compared to mixing chamber technology. The aim of this study was to validate two modern devices (E-sCOVX and Quark RMR) against...

Metabolic monitoring in the intensive care unit: a comparison of the Medgraphics Ultima, Deltatrac II, and Douglas bag collection methods.

BACKGROUND The accuracy of oxygen consumption measurement by indirect calorimeters is poorly validated in mechanically ventilated intensive care patients where multiple confounders exist. This study sought to compare the Medgraphics Ultima (MGU) and Deltatrac II (DTII) devices, and the Douglas bag (DB) technique in mechanically ventilated patients at rest. METHODS Prospective comparison of ox...

Estimation of energy requirements for mechanically ventilated, critically ill patients using nutritional status

BACKGROUND There is very little information on what is considered an adequate energy intake for mechanically ventilated, critically ill patients. The purpose of the present study was to determine this energy requirement by making use of patients' nutritional status. METHODS The study was conducted in a multidisciplinary intensive care unit of Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. Patien...

Optimal protein and energy nutrition decreases mortality in mechanically ventilated, critically ill patients: a prospective observational cohort study.

BACKGROUND Optimal nutrition for patients in the intensive care unit has been proposed to be the provision of energy as determined by indirect calorimetry and the provision of protein of at least 1.2 g/kg. METHODS Prospective observational cohort study in a mixed medical-surgical intensive care unit in an academic hospital. In total, 886 consecutive mechanically ventilated patients were inclu...

Comparison of measured versus predicted energy requirements in critically ill cancer patients.

BACKGROUND Accurate determination of caloric requirements is essential to avoid feeding-associated complications in critically ill patients. METHODS In critically ill cancer patients we compared the measured and estimated resting energy expenditures. All patients admitted to the oncology intensive care unit between March 2004 and July 2005 were considered for inclusion. For those patients enr...
